Hanging artwork in our homes.
The decorating dilemma that all of us have faced as we accessorize our homes is where to place wall art... anything from fine paintings to simple family photographs to trinkets we've collected over the years.
The main point to remember is to keep things in proper scale. Don't place a small clock or print over a large-scale sofa and don't place a large painting on a very small wall. A good rule of thumb is to have a minimum of three to six inches on each side of a painting. Keep a large sofa balanced by placing a large painting above it or, better yet, try grouping various sized items together.
You could try:
Grouping five or more different-sized mirrors together (uneven numbers look best)
Using paintings or prints mixed with some beautiful plates as a grouping
Adding a small shelf or basket in the middle of a wall arrangement with cascading greenery
Placing an old key or antique hat collection among your artwork
Grouping unique empty frames together.
One tip to help with groupings of various sized items is to cut out a sheet of brown paper to size and lay out your arrangement on the floor first. Then mark on the paper exactly where the nails should be placed. Tape the paper lightly to the wall where you want it, mark the nail holes, remove the paper and then hang your pictures. It's much easier than hanging them all separately and saves so much time.
Finally, don't forget lighting. If you have a special piece of artwork, you need to invest in a good quality picture light to attach to the frame. It brings your painting to life and adds so much dimension to your rooms in the evening. If you want to bring a little glow to small pieces of art, hang them eight to ten inches above a table or floor lamp. This will cast a light on them that will create a different look and make them a focal point.
