Expanding your outdoor living areas.
There are few activities more refreshing than an afternoon of reading or relaxing on a shaded porch or patio. Spending time outdoors is one of our favorite pastimes. Porches and patios offer us the perfect way to extend our homes and give us the pleasure of being outdoors.
The porch or patio can be the most versatile room in the home. It acts as an indoor/outdoor space that can serve many needs - whether you're entertaining, container gardening or just simply relaxing.
The American porch lost its place of importance for a time in recent history, but is now returning with a renewed appreciation. It's a place where families and friends can once again gather.
Because porches and patios lead directly off the house, colors and furnishings should blend and harmonize in order to minimize the transition. Be sure to add pillows to sitting areas. They invite relaxation and give you a comfortable spot to curl up with a book or take a nap.
Don't forget that the little touches that decorate the porch are every bit as vital as the furnishings. Remember to decorate with comfort and ease on a porch or patio. Hang wreaths made of grapevines or bittersweet, honeysuckle or evergreens. It's the perfect place to hang dried flowers or to display treasures from the beach or nature walks. Garden tools, baskets and straw hats look great on display and don't forget the porch swing. Try to situate the swing to take advantage of your backyard views.
An enclosed porch can give you year-round comfort and shelter, whether it's during a rainstorm or the cold blustery days of winter. No matter where you live or how small your outdoor living area is, your can still personalize it with treasures that will make you and your family feel "at home".
