Relaxing and romantic ideas for the bedroom.

When it's time to rest and relax we need a clutter free, peaceful haven to retreat to. Your bedroom isn't the place for your exercise machines (which usually just get covered in clothes anyway) or for 'take home' work. Those things should remain in your living areas. The bedroom should never have things that remind you of unfinished business. It should be a place of escape, a retreat for your soul and your mind. Use some of the following ideas to change your bedroom into your retreat.

Nothing says romance quite like a canopy bed. If you aren't fortunate enough to have one you can create the look easily yourself by swagging fabric over the bed. Using two long panels of fabric, tie one end of each piece together with a large full knot and hook it into place centered over center of the bed at the desired height. Pull the panels out and down till you have the swag you prefer. Use a hook to hold the panels back. Place a beautiful painting or print above the bed and you'll have a great focal point in the room as well as an instant look of romance.

Another easy canopy idea can be done with two pre-made tab-top curtains and one short tab-top valance. Hang an attractive curtain rod (like you would over a window) approximately 4-5' long centered over the bed. The valance goes in the middle section with the long curtain panels on either side. These should be swagged back and make an easy way to give your room a new look without having to buy a canopy bed.

If you have a small bedroom you might want to consider removing the closet doors and recessing the bed into the closet. This gives you a cozy area to sleep as well as more space in the room for other things. An armoire can provide a place for extra hanging clothes as well as drawers for storage.

If you absolutely must have a work area in your bedroom, conceal it behind a fabric covered screen or use a bookcase or other piece of furniture to block your work area while giving you something nice to look at.

To make mismatched bedroom furniture work together in a room, try painting it all the same color. This gives you a cohesive feel while keeping your costs down.

Crown molding can do wonders in turning a plain room into that elegant retreat your looking for. Use thick moldings at ceilings and also around the doorframes for a rich look. You might also want to hang a beautiful chandelier with a ceiling medallion in the center of your room instead of the usual builders grade flush mounted fixture.

If there's room, try to have a cozy seating area in a corner. You could use a chaise lounge with a small table and lamp or try placing two chairs facing each other with an ottoman in between. If space is at a premium, place a bench at the foot of the bed (try to find one that's approximately the same width as the bed). It's a great place to sit and put on your shoes or to stack a few things without cluttering the bed.

Relax and sleep well!
