Decorating for the senses.
Nothing brings back memories of happy times quite like the smell of a homemade apple pie, curling up in a soft quilt by the fire, hearing your favorite song, the smell of freshly cut grass in the summer, or feeling the sand between your toes at the beach. These memories remind us of special times and awaken or senses to all that God has blessed us with.
We should consider all of our senses when we decorate as well. Enhance your home with wonderful scents. Citrus and floral scents are great in the summer, while apple and cinnamon are great in the fall. The sense of touch is stimulated by textures, so be sure to utilize soft snuggly quilts and throws, smooth soft velvet pillows, and nubby terry cloth towels. Use low wattage lamps, firelight or candles to give a warm glow to your rooms. Bright overhead light is great for reading but it's harsh and doesn't create a welcoming mood. Turn on soft background music. Instrumentals are great for relaxing and creating a peaceful setting. When life is too hectic to cook, stop by the market and bring home a roasted chicken with mashed potatoes and vegetables, and enjoy eating in your own home without the stress of having to cook or waiting for a table.
Home is our refuge... our safe place from the world. It welcomes and encourages every time we walk through the door or open our home to others, so don't ever underestimate the little touches. Those small things that stimulate our senses can brighten our mood as well as leave lasting impressions that could bless others for years to come.
