The colors of the new year.
As we begin this New Year, we also have the chance to look at fresh new trends on color and design for our homes.
According to Home Decor's Nov/Dec issue, the top trend this year in furnishings is casual once again in all regions of the country. Decorating themes like American country, tropical, shabby chic and lodge-style fall under this category, followed by perennial styles like contemporary, classic French and American formal.
The colors that we're choosing this year are the same comforting and therapeutic natural colors we've been using the past few years with some updated splashes of hot pink, orange, violet, teal and red. If these colors are too bold for you, try a softer hue of pastel pink, apricot or plum to get the same updated look.
The psychological effect that a color has on you is very important. Choose a color pallet that you love and that makes you feel comfortable. Don't go with the latest trend if it doesn't suit you or if you will end up feeling uncomfortable every time you walk into your home.
Cappuccino browns and soft greens with a hint of gold and bronze are new this year and are considered neutrals. They are calming colors and would be a good choice for bedrooms or living areas.
If you love the feeling of a beach retreat, choose soft blues and grays. They give you the feeling of tranquility and have a spa-like quality.
If you have an outdoor or lodge style, choose pinecone, wheat or grassy colors for your walls or furniture.
Red or orange is perfect for your room when you want to add drama or demand attention. It is known to increase your appetite and would be a great choice for a kitchen or dining room.
Soft yellows and golds brighten up dark rooms, offices and basements and add a cheerful quality to any room that needs a lift.
To enliven a more traditional interior, try adding a splash of hot pink, purple, aqua, orange or green on a pillow or small chair.
The key in choosing color for your home is to make sure all your colors harmonize and flow from room to room. Buy several quarts of paint and experiment with different colors in various areas to find just the right blend. It can be challenging but is well worth the effort when you find your perfect color scheme.
Happy New Year and Happy Painting!
